Tina wanted some new socks however the only store with cool socks was across the river, something Tina's mom said was too far away. So Tina went to her grandfather's house and had him row her across the river. They made it to the other side where Tina went to the big sock store and got a perfect pair of red, yellow, and green socks. Tina loved them so much that she vowed that she would never take them off! As days went by, the socks started to stink so bad that even animals started to fall over. Her friends finally had enough that they carried her to the river and washed her socks. Tina liked her clean socks so much that she then vowed that she is going to wear clean socks from now on. The story ends with Tina wanting to get a matching red, yellow, and green shirt and when her mom asks her if she is going to wash it, Tina replies with no, if she waits long enough, the kids at school will wash it for her.
Evaluation and Comments:
Smelly Socks is a funny little story about Tina, a girl who loves her socks so much that she never ever wants to take them off. However as days go by, her family, friends, and even the nearby animals can't take the stench that is coming off Tina's smelly socks! So everyone teams up and makes sure that Tina washes her socks, teaching Tina how nice it feels to wear clean socks.
Although a little exaggerated, this book is perfect for younger students (particularly Pre-k and Kinder) when teaching students about personal hygiene and the importance of keeping ourselves and our clothes clean. Some activities to follow this up is you can have students write/discuss the importance of keeping ourselves clean and then, you can have a fun arts and craft activity that allows students to design/create their own socks.
In conclusion, Smelly Socks has my seal of approval! 🥇😄
