A twist on the classic Gingerbread Man Story, we see the story of The Jalapeño Man. The second he is created by the little ol' rancher's wife, he runs away as fast as he can. As he runs further into Texas, he outruns many animals such as armadillo's, javelinas, and a rattlesnake. Once Jalapeño Man faces the dilemma of crossing the Rio Grande, a sneaky and sly coyote offers his assistance. However, the coyote ends up tricking Jalapeño Man and eats him! Although, the coyote underestimated Jalapeño Mans hotness, suffers greatly from the spiciness, and vows to never eat another Jalapeño Man again.

Evaluation and Comments:

If you're a fellow Texan, you are going to love The Jalapeño Man! From the cacti, armadillo's, and the blue bonnets, we are met with all the things that help make Texas what it is while also reading a Texan take on a classic children's story.

If your class is learning about Texas or is celebrating Texan day, this would be a great book to read. The author did a great job in updating The Gingerbread Man story and changing it in a way that us fellow Texans can relate to and really enjoy. Also, it has beautiful illustrations that really make you feel like you're apart of the story (also notice how the coyote can be seen on every page lurking!) If you choose to read this during Texas Day, you could follow up this reading with a fun arts and craft activity or have the students talk about what parts of the book they believe represents Texas. You could also focus on the coyote and discuss the importance of thinking things through before carrying out an action.

In conclusion, The Jalapeño Man has my seal of approval! 🥇😄
