Evaluation and Comments:
The Great Migration: Journey To The North does an effective job in informing readers about what the Great Migration was and explaining it through the point of view of many families; such as her own families experience.
The usage of short yet informational poems is absolutely perfect for younger children. Children will be able to better comprehend what caused the Great Migration and the emotions that many families were going through while also being able to enjoy the format and illustrations. Along with that, the inclusion of the authors own experience makes the story feel more personal and real and will hopefully allow students to connect with it better.
For activities, students can complete a cause and effect chart over the Great Migration and then discuss it. Students could also role-play as a family during this time where they can talk about what types of feelings/decisions they will be faced with and what action they would take.
In conclusion, The Great Migration: Journey To The North has my seal of approval! 🥇😄
